A Little Help from My Friends

Do you realize that it’s been six months since I introduced a new product? Have I had ideas? Yes—in fact, so many of them, I get stymied at where to begin. Because you are my readers, and therefore potential customers, what would you like from me?

Let me help you get started. I want to do a second edition of the Real-Life Detox book. There are some topics I want to remove and have ideas how to replace them. What would you like to see? Intermittent fasting for detoxing? More recipes? How to detox every week? Would you like it digital only or would some of you like a hard copy?

How about aging with a vengeance? Would you like to see more related information related to that topic? And believe me, there’s a lot more.

How about a revisit to conditions like bone health, digestive health, and on and on?

How about format? Written? More audio? Video? Live presentations? How about beginning the traveling seminar tour I was beginning when covid hit?

Take some time, get your favorite beverage, and tell me what you’d like to read, see, or hear. Then let me know.

What are you prepared to do today?

Spring Cleaning

Earlier this week I was an election worker for the Michigan primary. It wasn’t particularly busy at times so, as often happens, people asked me what I do and then checked out my website. The conversation came around to my thoughts on detoxing. I said I thought it was really good; after all, I wrote Real-Life Detox to help people clean out their liver to get a head start on eating better.

A woman asked me about the basics of the program. After I talked about the cruciferous and allicin-containing vegetables, she said she likes to cook a lot of greens such as collard and mustard greens. I said, “Great. Just no bacon.” She laughed because I knew exactly where she was going with the comment. I gave her some ideas on how to make it healthier while maintaining the flavors.

I decided to do two things. First, reduce the price of the e-book to $7.95 for a week; the price goes back up Sunday, March 10. Second, I added the recipe for collard or any type of greens to the Recipes section of the website. My opinion is that it rivals the Cabbage Soup as the foundation of the foods you can eat that have all the detox veggies. And when you’re cooking supper and you need a green vegetable, these greens are a good option instead of nuking some peas or adding one more salad. Try them and let me know what you think.

It’s time to spring clean the most important thing in your life: you.

What are you prepared to do today?

Nutrition Can’t Fix Everything: Your Microbiome

In this post, I’ll cover another reason that nutrition can’t fix everything: our microbiome, the bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms that live on and in our bodies. From birth, our microbiome is the result of contact with our mothers and others, our environment, and the foods we eat and don’t eat. It’s also the result of the antibiotics we’ve taken when we’re sick as well as those that have been in the foods we’ve eaten.

Our microbiome works best when it’s in balance; the problem is that doesn’t happen in . . .

Nutrition Can’t Fix Everything: Baggage

Happy New Year! I hope you’re ready to make your health a priority in 2017. Let’s begin the New Year right with a statement I discussed in my monthly conference call. I received an email in which someone was convinced that there was a nutritional solution to a health issue that she was having. I thought about that for a couple of months—not her condition but the question in general.

Nutrition cannot fix everything, whether a change in diet or a supplement. I’m going to give you three reasons this week as to why.

Let’s . . .

Rule 3: Move More

While I absolutely believe that we need to eat less and eat better, the one thing that can help you faster than anything else is exercise. Changes in how your body responds to insulin happen within three days. Your heart rate and blood pressure start to decrease within a week. Even your digestive system will work better.

To help you out, there are two papers I wrote in the Health Info section of my website. Interval . . .

Rule 2: Eat Better

The New Year is the time for beginning new habits. Some people, maybe most people, like to clean sweep old habits, flush things out, and start over. Look at the Internet ads about detoxing and cleansing: you can cleanse your system with programs that cost hundreds of dollars, using herbs no one has ever heard of, and end up spending hours in the bathroom.

Or you can simply eat better. That’s the objective of Real-Life Detox. There are foods that can help the detoxification system . . .

Rule 1: Eat Less

The holiday season is full of tradition, and I hope you celebrated according to your beliefs and spent the time with family and friends. But as the end of the year approaches, it’s time to get ready for 2017. This week, I’m breaking with tradition and doing a message a day to help you get ready. In addition, I’m doing a Detox Weekend via Facebook January 6–8.

One of the things that we should all do is eat less. I’m not talking about losing weight. That’s important if you need to, but I mean . . .

The Detox Myth: Half Wrong

When health experts criticize cleansing and detox programs, they attack the many questionable programs that are touted on the Internet. From colonics to foot pads, their criticism is correct. But they also get it half wrong.

Cleansing is another word for fasting, and there’s plenty of research to support a fast of two to four days to improve the immune system. But fasting doesn’t mean you get no calories; by definition, fasting is taking in fewer calories than your body needs. To make fasting more efficient, restricting calories to 800 or fewer seems to accomplish that task in . . .

The Detox Myth: Half Right

I’ll spend the next two blogs addressing the legitimacy of detox arguments that I’ve seen on several websites in their year-end health recommendations. When it comes to detox, they get it half right and half wrong. Today, the half right.

During presentations, I often describe some detox programs as something like standing outside on one foot during the full moon while drinking some lemon-pepper-maple syrup concoction with one hand while rubbing your belly with the other. There are some weird . . .

Gourmet Detox Weekend: Creating Healthier Habits

A long-time reader shared an interesting email response regarding the message on Fast Day. When he read that I was only doing liquids as part of the Gourmet Detox Weekend, he said that he has done one fast day with just liquids as well. When he does, he feels great and actually has more energy at the end of the day. He’s adapted it to fit his work schedule, but it’s a habit he’s had for over 20 years—20 years!

That’s . . .
